for the believers. new moon today.

A core quality of beliefs is that they are chosen. This means that they can change.

After Examination (2017) — Lucy Ivanova

I love looking at the poetry of the stars and how it’s reflected in us here below. There’s wisdom everywhere.

With astrology, there are certain core concepts that can help us read the metaphors being transmitted, the metaphors living through us.

Take for example the new moon on Saturday, November 30, 2024.

It’s in the sign of Sagittarius. What we can do next is look and see: where is the ruler of Sagittarius? Is there anything else in Sagittarius? What aspect is the moon making to other celestial bodies?

Let’s check:

  1. The ruler of Sagittarius, Jupiter, is in Gemini (Mercury’s sign).
  2. Yes, Mercury is also in Sagittarius (so Mercury and Jupiter are in each others’ signs).
  3. Its most recent aspect was a trine to Mars, and the next aspect is a square to Saturn (who is currently in Pisces).

What all these factors have in common is the element of change. There are three types of signs in the 12-sign zodiac:

  1. Cardinal, a.k.a. initiatory (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn)
  2. Fixed, a. k.a stabilizing (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius)
  3. Mutable, a. k. a. changeable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces).

So we can see that Sagittarius, Gemini, and Pisces all belong to the “mutable, a. k. a. changeable” class. The sun is in these signs at the end of seasons, when the average seasonal weather tends to be more variable and transitory.

In general, Sagittarius speaks to keeping our options open as we go, ignited by a core motivating passion that takes a variety of forms.

Jupiter in Gemini speaks to the reality that sometimes there are no “better” choices, there are just choices that we can live with.

Mercury in Sagittarius speaks to putting theory into practice — sometimes there are no perfect conditions, just conditions we have to live with.

The square to Saturn in Pisces speaks to how some beliefs stick around for a long time. This doesn’t mean that they are unchangeable. It just means that some beliefs have a greater burden of proof. This aspect also speaks to the value of doubt in our spiritual practice, or any more intangible practice. It helps us avoid dogmatism.

All this, combined with the energy of a new moon, is an invitation to embrace our world as it is right now, and make the (small, private, consequential) changes we feel are necessary in order to get into alignment with our True North. These themes will be especially at the forefront for those who have sensitive placements at or around 09° Sagittarius.
